The Detached Mission

Review

The Detached Mission (Odinochnoye plavanie) is a 1985 Soviet action movie about group of Soviet marines trying to stop a CIA attack on the Russian fleet. It has been described as "soviet rambo", I do not agree with this comparison. Even though the movie was released two years after Rambo 2, it fails to live up to the level of these movies.

The pacing is lackluster, the plot is forced and the movie looks awful even by 1980's soviet standards. Seriously, the movie looks like one of those old-school skating videos. (it has come to my attention that the site I got the movie off of had it in very low quality, but the version on youtube from the Mosfilm account is not much better)

I was really expecting more from "soviet rambo", the thing that really killed it for me is the first hour of the movie being a very slow exposition, while pretty much all of the action happens during the last 20 minutes of the movie. A lot of care was put into the backgrounds and overall environments: the ships, the helicopter areal shots, the inside of the secret CIA base, all look as they should. It really feels more like a James Bond knock off than a Rambo knock off. I'm giving it a score of 1.5/5, I'd rather have watched normal rambo.

Plot

Premise (spoiler free):

- It's the middle of the cold war, american-soviet relations are on the upturn. The situation is so stable in fact, that the heads of the military industrial complex are beginning to worry that this will mean an end to the bloated defense budget. Crowder (a CIA big shot) sends Hessalt (a paranoid mentally unstable ptsd ridden vietnam era officer) to a secret hideout in the middle of the Pacific Ocean in order to orchestrate a false flag operation incriminating the soviet union.

Rest of plot (spoilers):

Hessalt knows full well that he's being used by Crowder. There is no chance that after what he was ordered to do in Vietnam and what he is going to do now, will he ever be able to come back to the US. The risk of him spilling the beans is too high of a risk for Crowder. Instead of taking the fall for Crowder, after the first missile fails to hit it's intended target, Hessalt decided to shoot anyone he can't trust on the island and take control of the missile batteries. Hessalt's missile gets locked on a civilian yacht, the pair on it manage to send out a distress signal. The soviet high command somehow receives the signal and sends a unit of soviet marines to investigate. Bombers get sent by the CIA to level the whole island after they learn that Hessalt went haywire. - Major Shatokhin find the stranded Americans and offers to take them back home on his ship, but due to mistrust they chose to stay on the island for one more night with the Major. Hessalt, who has been receiving reports on the pair from an American submarine, doesn't want the Soviet marines finding his secret base. So he decides that the best course of action is, I kid you not, to sends a squad of assassins on hang gliders to get rid of them. The assasins manage to kill the wife of the yacht owner, which prompts him to go with the marines and scout the island for answers. Using their experience from Vietnam, Hessalt's goons manage to ambush the group in the jungle. Thanks to their superior Soviet cqb training the marines overwhelm the Americans. Hessalt finally decides to lock another missile on the Soviet fleet hoping that he'll be able to escape during the chaos, he leaves the base and gets ready to escape on the submarine. Shatokhin and his men find an air vent that they can climb into to enter the base. Despite controlling the batteries remotely, Hessalt still announces the launching process on the speakers in the base. Shatokhin somehow knows exactly where to find the launch room and gets through all the security doors by simply unplugging the power. In the last moment he manages to cancel the launch by hitting the big red button on the wall. - Hessalt in desperation changes his plan and engages the soviet fleet on his own. His subarine and two frigates get annihilated effortlessly by one soviet destroyer. Shatokhin's squad even manage to snipe a couple sailors from the shore before the ship gets taken down. While having a celebratory smoke after battle, the Major gets shot in the back by some goon on the burning ship. Finally the CIA's bomber arrives and removes any evidence of American involvement.
